Lions, witches & wardrobes

Updated: Oct 1, 2023

I was recently reading The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe with some of my students. I love this part where Peter and Susan talk to the Professor about Lucy's experience of Narnia and how they are skeptical of its existence: “Logic!" said the Professor half to himself. "Why don't they teach logic at these schools? There are only three possibilities. Either your sister is telling lies, or she is mad, or she is telling the truth. You know she doesn't tell lies and it is obvious that she is not mad. For the moment then and unless any further evidence turns up, we must assume that she is telling the truth.” Hmmm—maybe we should be teaching more logic in schools? Although, I think these days we'd say that one of the possibilities could be that Lucy has a rather incredible imagination (a fine quality in itself!) rather than calling her mad...
